Dear Reader,

I am very happy about the actual success story from one of our SEA-winners 2014, Ecovative Design. IKEA will revolutionize their packaging system with the help of this US Start-Up, away from harming styropor to 100 percent sustainable biomaterial out of mushroom foam. This impressively underlines the power of innovation from small companies and the outstanding level of assessment from our brilliant SEA jury. It is therefore all the more important to support these companies appropriately. The political environment, bureaucratic obstacles and foremost the access to capital are the major barriers. While in the past times major capital volume was pumped into destructive large enterprises, the market for sustainable investments is growing very fast.

The actual retreat from fossil fuel plants from the Rockefellers, once the dynasty in the oil- and coal industry and one of the most influential families shows us that rationality won even within the hardest proponents for environmental destructive enterprises. If large investors follow these examples, companies and enterprises that will stop destroying our planet and start to repair it, will become the large players and start a base to a livable future.

Ecovative Design - Winner in the category 'Climate, Environment & Energy' 2014
The furniture giant IKEA would like to substitute its styropor packaging with a diminishable material from mushroom cultures. This mushroom-foam material was not developed by Ikea itself, it is made from a known start-up called 'Ecovative Design', which won a SEA in 2014 in the category 'Climate, Environment & Energy'. We congratulate to this success.

Short Intro Ecovative Design:
Ecovative Design produces materials from agricultural by-products and mushrooms, which are used as a natural alternative to plastic or wood. At a time of increasing environmental pollution through petroleum-based plastics, this bio-material can be regarded as a thoroughly revolutionary method of producing anything from packaging or construction materials to surfboards. The mushroom materials are not only environmentally friendly and cost-effective, but also stable, versatile in use and of course totally compostable. A highly promising alternative that can drastically reduce the excessive use of plastic.

Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things
Edited by Michael Braungart and William McDonough (2010)

'Reduce, reuse, recycle' urge environmentalists; in other words, do more with less in order to minimize damage. As William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in their provocative, visionary book, however, this approach perpetuates a one-way, "cradle to grave" manufacturing model that dates to the Industrial Revolution and casts off as much as 90 percent of the materials it uses as waste, much of it toxic. Why not challenge the belief that human industry must damage the natural world? In fact, why not take nature itself as our model for making things? A tree produces thousands of blossoms in order to create another tree, yet we consider its abundance not wasteful but safe, beautiful, and highly effective.
