European Commission
Wilhelm Molterer (EIB - Director of the European Fund for Strategic Investment) and Marc Fähndrich (European Commission) explained possibilities how sustainable entrepreneurs can get attractive financing from the #investEU Initiative.

This Investment plan of the European Commission (EC) aims at growth and quality jobs within the EU. It is a joint initiative with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF). In particular, projects being innovative and promising but also risky could benefit. One key element of #investEU is "additionality". Hence, ideas facing problems to be financed by traditional patterns could now be realised.

By providing risk guarantees, Enterprises can invest in innovative, sustainable and future-oriented projects. Operations approved under the Investment Plan for Europe now represent a total financing volume of EUR 27.5 billion. They are located in 27 Member States and are expected to trigger total investment of around EUR 154 billion. (15 November 2016). These were mainly reaching out in the areas of SMEs, Energy, Digital as well as Research and Development. The EIF has approved 234 SME financing agreements. Close to 377,000 SMEs and Midcaps are expected to benefit.

Given its success, President Juncker has proposed to

  • doubling #investEU, in terms of duration and financial capacity, providing the necessary certainty to promoters and allowing for it to be continued in the future.
  • extend the initial three-year period (2015-2018) with a target of EUR 315 billion.
  • focus on financing more cross-border and sustainable projects, linking #investEU to the ambitious targets from COP21 climate deal.

Making Sustainability Work: Best Practices in Managing and Measuring Corporate Social, Environmental and Economic Impacts

by Marc J. Epstein (2008)

In recent years, corporations of all sizes and orientations have become more sensitive to social issues and stakeholder concerns, and they are collectively striving to become better corporate citizens (in some cases, urged on by shareholder pressure or government regulations). The best practices in corporate sustainability are no longer the exclusive domain of companies like Ben & Jerry's or Body Shop as they were a decade ago; now, large, multi-national companies like G.E. and Wal-Mart are leading the way with significant financial and organizational commitments to social and environmental issues. To help managers and academics keep their eye on the ever-moving target of sustainability, award-winning author and academic Marc Epstein's provides an authoritative and comprehensive guide to implementing corporate sustainability initiatives and to measuring both their social and financial impacts.
