Dear Reader,

Together with around 250 high-calibre guests from business, science, politics and society, on 7th October we enjoyed a stunning 3rd SEA Gala at the Sophiensäle in Vienna. As well as a stirring performance by violinist Lettice Rowbotham and a moving appearance by Conchita Wurst, the evening was characterised by the remarkable project ideas and emotional speeches that made the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Awards 2014 a truly special occasion.

The SEA for the “Best Idea” was awarded to “DUS Architects” – a Dutch company which has printed a house in 3D made out of recycled rubbish. The SEA for the “Best Project” was awarded to “Interface Deutschland GmbH”, for producing carpet tiles out of discarded fishing nets. The “SEA of Excellence” has been presented to two persons this year: to Barack Obama for his efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and to Boyan Slat and “The Ocean Cleanup” – a forward-thinking and passive form of collection to clean the oceans of plastic. Further prizes were awarded in “eight categories” – all of them pioneering, innovative ideas that are making a high social contribution towards a sustainably positive future.

SEA of Excellence

In 2013, Obama announced a range of measures to reduce carbon emissions, prepare the USA for the effects of climate change and encourage international efforts to combat global climate change. Barack Obama’s national leadership in this sector and the measures announced in the interests of the global community are unprecedented and deserve international recognition. In presenting the “SEA of Excellence” to Barack Obama, we would like to reward him for his commitment to highlighting awareness of climate change as a global issue and thank him officially for this work.

Millions of tons of plastic have already found its way into the oceans. Even if we were to stop producing plastic now, this would still not offer any solution for the world’s seas that are already polluted. 19-year-old Boyan Slat, the founder of “The Ocean Cleanup”, has set himself the task of resolving this problem, and with his team he is working to free the oceans from plastic again.

Responsibility Atlas Austrian Economy by Julius Raab Stiftung
New publication by Julius Raab Stiftung Companies bear broad responsibility for the Austrian prosperity. These dimensions of responsibility are multifarious and diverse. The „Verantwortungsatlas österreichische Wirtschaft“ (Responsibility Atlas Austrian Economy) by Julius Raab Stiftung reveals in five chapters, in which spheres companies bear responsibility and which output follows. With modern infographics based on empirical data and a portion of tongue in cheek, the atlas offers clearly represented insights and some cause of thought for why companies are not the problem, but the solution for our society.
